HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MARINE CORPS

On November 10th, 1775 Captain Samuel Nicolas, armed with a warrant from the Continental Congress to recruit and train two battalions of naval infantry, set up shop in Tun Tavern Philadelphia and began accepting applications to the Continental Marine Corps.

I’m reasonably certain that every Marine throughout the 234 year history of the United States Marines has found the symbolism of our beloved Corps being born in a bar very appropriate indeed.

But where the Marine Corps was founded is of little import to the men and women who, over the course of almost 250 years of its existence, have come to know it simply as “Our Corps” and who, with their blood and their sweat, helped to make it the finest fighting force on the face of the Earth.

They are men and women who are and always have been the very finest that this nation has to offer.

From the Halls of Montezuma
To the shores of Tripoli
We fight our country’s battles
In the air, on land, and sea;
First to fight for right and freedom
And to keep our honor clean;
We are proud to claim the title
Of United States Marine.

Our flag’s unfurled to every breeze
From dawn to setting sun;
We have fought in every clime and place
Where we could take a gun.
In the snow of far-off Northern lands
And in sunny tropic scenes;
You will find us always on the job –
The United States Marines.

Here’s health to you and to our Corps
Which we are proud to serve;
In many a strife we’ve fought for life
And never lost our nerve.
If the Army and the Navy
Ever look on Heaven’s scenes,
They will find the streets are guarded
By United States Marines.

Happy 234th birthday to all of  my Marines wherever you may be.

OOH – RAH!
