WELCOME TO STASI TOWN U.S.A.
{Posted in News/Current Events, Video on August 31st, 2008 by Scott }Yesterday the FBI, the Minneapolis Police and the local county sheriff raided several houses that were BELIEVED to be the residences of people who MIGHT intend to PEACEFULLY protest at the republican convention.
The police used assault rifle armed SWAT teams and broke down the doors of the houses. Then they refused to show search warrants.
These people had their doors kicked in and then were detained or imprisoned on the SUSPICION that they might protest at the republican convention.
Here's what the First Amendment of the Constitution of the United States says about this:
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
The people in this video — taken by Jane Hamsher of FireDogLake and Glenn Greenwald of Salon.com — were arrested on the suspicion that they MIGHT assemble not that they had assembled and broken the law but that they MIGHT assemble.
Here is a blog post from Eileen Clancy of I-Witness Video as the arrests were taking place. I-Witness Video was the group that filmed police in New York illegally arresting protesters at the 2004 Republican convention and helped to get charges dismissed against hundreds of them.
Clancy was sleeping in one of the houses being raided and she was detained by the police on the suspicion that she might protest the republican convention. Or film people protesting the convention. Or think about protesting the convention. Or maybe think about filming people protesting the convention.
Or not.

I'm willing to hold my patriotic bona fides in the form of my DD-214 — with all of the awards, commendations and decorations that are listed on it — up against ANY of yours ANY fucking day of the week.
That is, provided you even have a DD-214 or know what it is without having to use the link that I provided to find out.
