QUOTE OF THE DAY

{Posted in Quote of the Day on January 31st, 2008 by Scott }

“We’ve learned that a good or bad U.S. president can make the difference between war and peace. A good or bad Italian prime minister makes no difference at all."

Monica Frassoni — Italian representative to the European Union Parliament when asked why an Italian politician was in South Carolina last week as an observer of the primary there.

I’M LEAVING ON A JET PLANE

It's about zero dark thirty in the morning here in Seattle and I'm off to the airport to catch my flight to Louisville Kentucky by way of the Twin Cities.

If I've got some time I'll try to do a little airport blogging, either from Seatac or from the Hooterville Minneapolis/St.Paul airport.  In either case pray for me for I'm booked on Northwest and none too happy about it if truth be told.

Fortunately my seat is Teh Awesome — emergency exit with no seat row in front — so I'll be comfy at least.

SON, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING?

THE VIEW FROM AROUND HERE

Interstate 90, the main east/west highway from Seattle to Chicago and thence to New York, has been closed due to avalanche conditions in Snoqualmie Pass today.

Snow has been falling in the pass at the rate of an inch an hour over the past twenty four hours and hundreds of big rig trucks and cars are parked on either side of the Cascade Mountains waiting for the snow to stop and the highway to reopen.

The pass, which at 3,022 feet is the lowest of the passes that remain open throughout the winter — or are at least supposed to remain open — and is just over a half hour drive from Seattle, has received more than 350 inches of snow already this year with the possibility of another 200+ inches of accumulation before spring.

Snowboarding and skiing conditions at the Summit at Snoqualmie Resort are ideal — if you could just get there.

A BILL IN EXILE FACTOID

I think it's important to note this very telling little statistic from the Florida Primary yesterday:

On the Democratic side the primary basically didn't count beyond being a bit of a dog and pony show since no delegates were being awarded due to Florida's state Democratic Party having moved their primary date contrary to the rules of the Democratic National Committee.

Plus, all of the Dems running agreed not to actively campaign in the state but simply to have their names on the ballot.

On the Republican side the Florida primary very much counted since 114 delegates and 111 alternates were on the line.

Even though the Dem's primary meant nothing {for now} Hillary Clinton fucking drubbed John McCain 856,944 votes to 693,425 votes in a state that is perfectly split 50/50 Democrat and Republican.

Just FYI

This has been a Bill in Exile Factoid.
