MATTHEW MITCHAM — COMING OUT ALIVE
Mathew Mitcham talks about depression, self-mutilation, alcoholism and his crystal meth addiction.
Oh, and his Olympic gold medal too.
Aside from the fact that he’s totally adorable and a big old homo {from Australialand no less!} and therefore I totes wanna fuck him — I’ve always had mad respect for Mitcham, both as a competitor and as a survivor.

MOST…ADORABLE…OLYMPIAN…EVER!
I’m looking forward to reading it. Matt is certainly an inspirational figure in overcoming the many adversities he’s faced.
And I must concur: I totally want (in) him. He is so totally dorky and adorable. He implied his bottom-ness in a really cute interview on Australia’s Pam Ann Show at the end where he says Lachlan, his partner, “likes this one.” Watch and see what I mean: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Trjp1lCg8xY

And after all that he emerged as a pretty nice guy too.
Very genuine.

He’s cute!
Scott I am curious, I don’t recall in all the years reading the blog that you have ever really talked about what brought about an end to the partying lifestyle you speak about when telling stories of life in NYC here. Was there a trigger moment that caused you to think enough is enough?

Oh come on. It’s the glasses what got you.

I was afraid my dogs would become neglected, Gregorio — so I quit. It was as simple as that.
Weird, huh?

Nope, not weird at all!!! When you think of the unconditional love that dogs give us, even when we are at our worst….they are still there 100% for us, how could we not want to give 100% of ourselves to them?!

Thank you for sharing this! I think it’s pretty awesome that he’s willing to own his shit, especially in the wake of Lance Armstrong and that whole debacle. Yes, he’s as adorable as hell, but now he’s also got even more of my respect.

Prioritizing pooches – not weird AT ALL!

Matthew’s brave “confessions” (for want of a better word), particularly regarding his addiction to meth, is already garnering him tremendous respect here in Australia – not only because his immense difficulties make his achievements seem even more remarkable – but also because the many young men who love him and look up to him can now take a look at their *own* use, or addiction[s], to meth and other “party” drugs, and consider how they might be affecting their own futures, their health, their LIVES, and be doing so with the guidance and perspective of a non-judgemental, relatable, and REAL man’s story.
Matthew’s story will REALLY help our queer youth, I just know it in my heart; Mitcham’s story will start conversations – between friends, between partners, between parents and their queer kids, and if that is ALL it ever does (but I’m SURE it will do much, much more), then that is already a tremendously loving and positive gift from Matthew Mitcham to every person that hears and shares his story
