WHY I LOVE SEATTLE — REASON # 1,987
In spite of the fact that Seattle — at 47 degrees 36 minutes north latitude — is by far the northernmost major city in the United States {nooooo, Anchorage doesn’t fucking count} we’ve got palm trees out the ass here.
I’ve got neighbors down the street who have two magnificent, twenty foot tall Royal Palms in their front yard. Perhaps the only examples of their species living north of Texas.
Anyway, the amazing thing about the image above of the waterfront with its beautiful row of beachfront palm trees is that it’s not in Seattle — but in Vancouver, British Columbia, about two and half hours drive north from here up in Canadialand.
You can say what you will about our rain — one of the things you can say is that we get ten fewer inches a year than New York City or D.C. — but we really do have the most amazing climate in North America.
And that incredible Mediterranean climate of ours pretty much only exists in the very narrow, 100 mile wide band between the Pacific Ocean and the Cascade Mountains.

thx for the vancouver shout out scott – one day progressives will rise up, kiss the wing-nut middle countrymen good bye, and unite Cascadia. Until then, happy proximity (both geographic and political… and admiration of a fine man) will do.

The only other place on earth I found like Seattle/Vancouver is Portugal along the coast from Lisbon, going north to Porto (Portuguese wine country).
Palm trees mixed with wonderful pines and grape vines.
But they don’t have Pikes Place Market, nor the Q.

When I first moved to Seattle, the neighbor’s 1980 Mercedes had a license plate bracket that said: “Seattle-The Switzerland of America”. I thought that was pretty apt.
Of course the other neighbor’s license plate bracket said, “Ted Bundy was a Husky-Go Wazzu!”

I would happily live in Seattle.
How much rain does it ACTUALLY get……???

Damien we get approximately 37 inches of rain a year. NYC gets 49.6 inches and rain heavy Miami gets 58.53 inches.
So compared to those places Seattle is practically a desert.
